Associations between anthropometric and movement variables with blood pressure of adolescents: a perspective through network analysis

Abstract

The decrease in physical activity has led to an increase in overweight and cardiovascular diseases, such as arterial hypertension. Thus, this article aimed to verify the association between anthropometric, movement and blood pressure variables in adolescents. A total of 139 students aged between 14 and 18 years participated in the study. Body mass, height, waist circumference (WC) and triceps and calf skinfolds were measured. Body mass index (BMI) and body fat (BF) were calculated. Movement variables were assessed through a physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ), and blood pressure was measured at rest. Data were analyzed using Spearman's correlation (SPSS 25.0) and network analysis (JASP 0.16.2.0). Significant correlations were found between BMI, systolic blood pressure (SBP) (r=0.414; p<0.001) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (r=0.332; p<0.001); WC, SBP (r=0.429; p,0.001) and DBP (r=0.258; p=0.002); CG, SBP (0.175; p=0.040) and DBP (0.185; p=0.029); and CG and sedentary behavior during the week (r=0.171; p=0.044). Network analysis revealed that the variables that most influenced blood pressure were BMI and WC. It was concluded that there was an association between anthropometric, movement and blood pressure variables of adolescents.
