Abstract

Oral hormonal contraceptives, known as contraceptive pills, are steroids used alone or in combination with the objective of preventing conception. However, its inappropriate use may be associated with risks, such as the development of Deep Vein Thrombose (DVT). This study aims to investigate the irrational use of contraceptives among women attended in a drug store in the municipality of Serra Talhada-PE, identifying possible health risk factors. It is a descriptive research, a quantitative approach and transversal delineation. The data are collected by half of a questionnaire with 10 objective questions, applied to 30 random dispensations of oral contraceptives, involving women over 18 years of age. The results reveal a higher prevalence of use in the age group of 31 to 38 years (50%; n=15), with the contraceptives now combined being the most used. It was also observed that 53.3% (n=16) of the participants reported having some risk factor associated with DVT. The use of contraceptives, combined with factors such as sedentary lifestyle and obesity, creates an increased risk for thrombosis. It stands out, therefore, the relevance of medical and pharmaceutical guidance in promoting the rational use of these medications, contributing to the health and safety of women.
