Abstract

The idea that the traditional use of a plant for hundreds of years does not guarantee safety, requiring studies to confirm this use, especially related to toxicity. Even though plants have a wide range of medicinal effects, they are not free from harmful effects on the body, which are observed when used in excess, such as overdoses of the natural product. In this context, the present research aimed to evaluate the toxicity of species of medicinal plants sold in the municipality of Gurupi, through bibliographical verification, with the aim of contributing to safer therapeutic approaches related to medicinal plants and herbal medicines. The results revealed that five species of medicinal plants are most sold in the municipality, namely lemon balm, chamomile, dandelion, ora-pro-nóbis and baleeira herb. It is also expected that the results of this research will contribute to the improvement of safer therapeutic approaches related to the use of medicinal plants and herbal medicines in the municipality of Gurupi and region.
